Recently I had the privilege of attending the Wedding Dress Through the Decades event as a volunteer photographer in support of Harbour Hospice. The show, beautifully organised by Yvonne Payne, brought together an incredible line-up of wedding dresses from the 1950s right through to the 2020s.

The turnout was fantastic, with the theatre filled with a happy and excited audience. Over 40 gowns graced the catwalk, each telling its own story. From vintage silhouettes inspired by Hollywood icons to the elegant influence of the royals, every decade was celebrated. One of the most heartwarming moments was seeing some gowns modelled by the daughters and granddaughters of the original brides – a true tribute to love and legacy.

A highlight of the evening was the very special showcase of Vinka Design: The Private Collection. For the first time, original Maree du Maru dresses by the legendary Vinka Lucas were shared with the public. These gowns are an important part of New Zealand bridal fashion history, and it was an honour to capture them through my lens.
Beyond the beauty of the dresses, the purpose of the event was close to everyone’s hearts – raising support for Harbour Hospice and the incredible work they do in our community.

As an Auckland Wedding Photographer, I loved being part of such a meaningful and joyful evening. From the timeless gowns to the laughter and stories shared, it was a reminder of why weddings and bridal fashion hold such a special place in our lives.
