Engagement vs Pre-Wedding Photos: What’s the Difference & Should You Do One?

By: Auckland Wedding Photographer Danni

If you’re newly engaged or counting down to your big day, you’ve probably come across the terms engagement shoot and pre-wedding photoshoot. But what’s the difference? Do you need one or both? Where should you shoot them — and what will you actually do with the photos?

Let’s unpack it all to help you decide what suits your love story best. Bonus Tip at the end, don't miss out!!

💍 Engagement Photos vs Pre-Wedding Photos – What’s the Difference?

Engagement Photos: These are usually taken shortly after your engagement. Think relaxed, casual outfits, real moments, and capturing the just-said-yes glow. They’re perfect for:

  • Save-the-dates or wedding invites

  • Announcing your engagement online

  • Just celebrating this milestone in your relationship!

  • Usually cost less than Pre-Wedding Photos

Pre-Wedding Photos: These are often taken closer to the wedding and may be more styled or formal. Some couples dress in wedding attire or wear elegant outfits and treat it like a full romantic session before the wedding day.

It’s also a great chance to do a test shoot with your wedding photographer, get comfortable in front of the camera, and capture dreamy images in locations that might not be possible on the wedding day.

Why Do (or Don’t) Couples Choose Them?

Reasons people love them: ✔️ It’s a nice way to get to know your photographer ✔️ Builds confidence and comfort in front of the camera ✔️ Helps nail your best angles, poses, and preferences ✔️ Can be used for wedding décor, websites, and more ✔️ Creates lasting memories before the wedding day rush

Why some skip them: – Budget constraints – Feel too camera-shy – Think wedding day photos are “enough”

🏞️ Choosing the Right Location – Indoor vs Outdoor

Outdoor shoots offer natural beauty and seasonal charm — if you are an outdoor person and love the nature, a golden hour at local reserve/beach/park will create stunning and dreamy photos. However it is weather dependent!

Indoor sessions (like studio shoots) offer consistency, privacy, and weather-proof reliability. These can be more relaxed and controlled.

Not sure how to choose or worried about the weather?

Phoenix Weddings offers both options: being super close to the International Award Winning Shakespear Regional Park, we have the freedom to do a photoshoot in this location with park, beach and cliff top backdrops. If the weather is less than ideal, we also offer indoor photoshoot options to avoid disappointment.

👗 What to Wear & How to Prepare

  • Stick to neutral or complementary colours

  • Avoid busy patterns and logos

  • Dress comfortably and true to your style

  • Hair & makeup: do a trial or wear what makes you feel best

  • Bring props: signs, champagne, a picnic, etc.

🕒 When’s the Best Time to Do a Shoot?

As soon as you're engaged or at least 3 months before your wedding if you're planning to use the images at your wedding. Consider seasonal factors: Autumn leaves, Spring blossoms, or Summer light can all add magic.

For outdoor photoshoot: golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) creates the most flattering and romantic light. For indoor photoshoot: any time works!
